How to remove makeup marks from a silk scarf

Jemima Wiltshire

Marks should be treated preferably as soon as possible after they occur to avoid setting.

Before beginning, ensure your working area is completely clean so as to avoid further staining your scarf. Use a small dab of liquid hand soap directly on the mark and rub the affected area with another section of silk (not finger or brush as it distorts the fibres). Avoid rubbing too hard or too much as this can damage your silk.

Flip the scarf over and repeat the process. Your scarf will then be ready for hand washing - See our article 'How to wash your silk scarf' on this topic for advice on how to proceed.
